With the several available window treatments, you might probably be choosing among Phoenix sunscreens, blinds and shutters. These are among the most popular choices of homeowners for several reasons. In this post, however, we take a closer look at some important considerations if you plan on having window shutters installed in your homes.

Shutters are a stylish alternative to curtains and blinds. These are chic and cost-effective that can easily give your room or house a new look. Compared to other window treatments like blinds and covers, these are also more hygienic as these can easily be cleaned – simply wipe clean and you’re done. Additionally, these are durable and long-lasting.

This type of window treatment also comes in a variety of styles, sizes, colors and panel designs. However, these aspects are what also makes choosing shutters a bit difficult. There are just so many choices that picking out one becomes a bit stressful! Here are some points to keep in mind:

Style

There are three main styles/types – plantation, solid and café.  Plantation shutters suit almost any type of home as these are very flexible and can get really creative. These come in several designs, colors and rods. Café shutters, on the other hand, are very common in restaurants and cafes (thus the name). These normally cover just the lower half of the window. Finally, solid shutters are best used for Victorian homes or older structures. These keep out more light and can offer ultimate privacy. Additionally, this style works great on French doors, and gives a very lovely Continental ambiance.

Material

The popularity of window shutters has led to the development of several materials. Wood is the most common choice, for obvious reasons. This material effortlessly exudes beauty and elegance, and it can fit almost any home style. Nonetheless, homeowners can also opt for medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and plastic. MDF, an engineered wood, is cheaper, but solid wood is still more durable. You can also go for polyvinyl shutters, especially for bathroom or other areas exposed to moisture or high humidity.

Color

The choice of color for your shutters is a personal thing. However, it can also be based mainly on your home’s style or décor. Generally, lighter-colored shutters will go well in darker rooms because these will draw in more natural light. On the other hand, darker-colored shutters will provide a good contrast to rooms with light colors. This will absorb more light, and balance off the room’s overall lighting.

Installation

Window shutters are generally easy to install, with basically only a drill and screwdriver to do the trick. Several manufacturers or home improvement contractors will also provide detailed instructions to help you with the process. However, if you think you are not the DIY-type of person, then you can simply let them do the task.

These are just a few of the several considerations you need to keep in mind before you decide to go for window shutters. If you are planning to have other window treatments like Phoenix sunscreens, blinds, covers and the like, you can simply give us a call and we will answer your every question.
